The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) engaged Bradford to provide construction management (CM) services for the modernization of the campus navigation. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Complex in Brooklyn, NY. is a 300-acre industrial park home to over 500 businesses and 11,000 employees, the complex required a modern, highly accessible gateway.
Gates:
Encompassed the revitalization of the Clinton Avenue and Cumberland Avenue vehicular, pedestrian and cyclist Gates; two of the most critical and extensively used entrances at the Industrial Park. Both gates underwent extensive transformations with the demolition and subsequent erecting of brand-new contemporary Gates designed to become more welcoming to the community, the demolition of existing and installation of new prefabricated security guard booths, and redesigned landscaping at both entrances. The work was carefully phased to ensure that both gates would never be simultaneously offline.
For the Clinton Avenue Gate, extensive civil work was also included as part of the scope to replace existing water meter pits, mains and readers to take advantage of the mobilization and soil disruption component already scheduled for the original scope.
Wayfinding:
This part of the scope included the replacement of over 50 (200lb) wall-anchored and projected Building ID Signs, over 1250 smaller wall surface mounted signs, and the installation of a mix of different building ID, campus and street directional, shuttle bus and ADA/Electric Vehicle Parking signs throughout the entire campus. This part of the scope was particularly challenging because it required extensive exploratory work to assess the conditions of both newer and older building structures. The coordination between the Brooklyn Navy, their many tenants and the CM team also became a crucial aspect to complete this part of the scope in a timely and swift manner.
