Velocity designed new Fire Alarm Control Panels, Fire Alarm Remote Annunciators, and associated fire alarm system devices across 18 New York City subway stations. As part of the modernization program, the stations will receive upgraded Central Alarm Monitoring Systems (CAMS) along with new fire alarm and fire protection systems. The 18 stations and two maintenance shops, totaling approximately 425,000 SF, will be equipped with new control panels, remote annunciators, smoke detectors, and manual pull stations. Five stations and one maintenance facility will also be fitted with fire protection systems, including sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pump installations.
Each site required detailed field surveys to generate accurate existing-conditions drawings in MicroStation. Velocity also provided electrical design support to CRC Associates Inc., which served as the communications systems designer for the project. In addition, our team performed comprehensive Quality Control reviews on all documentation to ensure conformity with MTA procedural standards. All work was completed in compliance with New York City regulations, applicable building and technical codes, and received approval from the New York State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) for historically landmarked stations.
This project presented unique scheduling and coordination challenges, with multiple standalone design packages executed concurrently on a staggered timeline. Through strategic planning and disciplined document management, the design team successfully delivered 11 design packages, originally slated for a 220-week schedule, within an accelerated 80-week timeframe.
